MediaTek introduced the Dimensity 9600 Pro on September 15 as its first premium mobile platform manufactured on TSMC’s 2-nanometer process. The company also announced the 3 nm Dimensity 9600M for a broader high-end segment. The launch matters because MediaTek is attempting to gain more ground in the most expensive Android phones, a market where Qualcomm has traditionally held a stronger position.
Dimensity 9600 Pro moves to 2 nm
A smaller manufacturing process does not automatically guarantee a faster phone, but it gives chip designers more room to add transistors, reduce power use or balance both goals. MediaTek describes a new CPU configuration, support for faster memory and upgraded graphics. The final result will still depend on each phone maker’s cooling system, power limits and software.

Buyers should distinguish short peak benchmark results from sustained performance. A thin phone can reach a high score briefly and then slow down as temperature rises. Gaming loops, camera tests, video export and prolonged mixed workloads will provide a more useful picture than a single promotional number.
A stronger NPU for on-device features
MediaTek says the dedicated neural processing unit improves the initial processing stage of generative AI prompts compared with the previous generation. The extra capacity is intended for features that run partly or fully on the phone, including text summaries, translation, photo processing and smaller local models. The claim covers a particular stage and should not be read as the same speed increase for every AI task.
Local processing can reduce latency and the amount of data sent to a cloud service, but model size, available memory and application optimization remain decisive. Two phones using the same chip may support different tools depending on the manufacturer, region, memory configuration and length of software support.
Graphics, gaming and cameras
The updated GPU targets higher performance at lower power. That sounds promising for games with high frame rates, but stable 120 fps also depends on display hardware, drivers, cooling and game optimization. A maximum shown in marketing material is not equivalent to a stable result after half an hour of play.
The image processor is designed to handle high-resolution photography and multiple video streams. Camera quality still depends heavily on the sensor, lens, stabilization and each manufacturer’s processing. Two Dimensity 9600 Pro phones can therefore produce noticeably different photographs and video.
What is confirmed and what remains unknown
MediaTek’s official material establishes the platform’s positioning, while Reuters confirms the TSMC 2 nm process and says the first phones are expected soon. A complete list of devices, European prices and independent battery results was not available at publication time.
Consumers should wait for the exact models sold in their market. Modem bands, eSIM support, cameras and update policies can matter more than a small difference in a synthetic test. A successful premium phone must combine speed, temperature control, battery life and long-term support.
How to evaluate the first phones
When retail devices arrive, four checks will be especially useful: sustained CPU and GPU performance after 20 to 30 minutes, surface temperature, power use on mobile networks and low-light camera quality. Short tests can hide aggressive throttling or rapid battery drain. For local AI, reviewers should also report how much memory remains available to models after the operating system and applications are loaded.
Software support deserves equal attention. A powerful chip loses value if operating-system upgrades are limited or security patches arrive late. Buyers should compare the complete device, its price and the manufacturer’s support commitment. Dimensity 9600 Pro may become important competition, but shipping phones rather than platform slides will determine its impact.
